AQSG Basket Quilt Exhibit at FACES

July 30 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 2:00 pm on Thursday and Friday, repeating until July 31, 2020

The Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore (FACES) invites you to their American Quilt Study Group (AQSG) Basket Quilt Exhibit, on view through July 31st.

About the Exhibit

The American Quilt Study Group encourages sound research in quilt history and provides opportunities for sharing discoveries. Founded in 1980, the group believes that quilts hold unique stories and essential history.

The quilt study challenges AQSG members to learn the history of an individual quilt by selecting one that addresses a specified design, style, or period. Members then make a small quilt that replicates or interprets the original and share their discoveries.

A March 2015 visit to the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Washington, D.C. for the spectacular Eye on Elegance exhibit and symposium led us to our study quilt. For the historic quilt we selected the spectacular Mary Simon Style Baltimore Album Quilt top, dated 1846, we focused on on block from the upper left corner.

The 2016 quilt study, 19th Century Baskets, addresses a popular American motif. The basket is the only human-made object appearing consistently in all styles, techniques and periods of quilt making. It may be no coincidence that around the world baskets, like quilts, ofter were made by women as a communal activity.

A basket is a symbol of women’s traditional work: the gathering, storing, and carrying of food and necessities. Baskets represent the burdens and joys of their lives. Filled with food or flowers, the basket becomes a symbol of abundance, hospitality, hope, and giving. Filled with eggs, it becomes a symbol of fertility. Baskets reach deep into the hearts and minds of quilt enthusiasts.
